Carlton Café turns to fashion
07 August 2002 - Shane Filan and his sister Mairead will transform their parent’s business, The Carlton Café, into a posh new clothes store. The Filan family business, run by Mae and Peter Filan for over 30 years in Castle Street, Sligo, closed its doors for the last time earlier this year as both parents retired.
However, Shane’s older sister, Mairead, has revealed that she will be launching a new fashion store in place of the café. Work on the project, which will be partly funded by Shane, is expected to begin later this year. The Filan family have run the café since the mid 60s. The family originally lived above the café and all six of Shane’s siblings, including the Westlife star has worked in the restaurant at some stage.
Both of them have already built homes here and Shane is part-way through building his own dream home, as featured in this paper a few weeks ago. When work is carried out to transform the café in to a chic fashion store, not much of the current shop front is expected to be retained. As it stands the glass, tile and aluminium front is very different from the other shops in Castle Street.

Opening Day For Filan's Store
09 October 2002 – Westlife star Shane Filan will be on his home turf in Castle Street next week to officially open the family’s new fashion store. Plans are well underway on Castle Street to convert the premises previously know as the Carlton Café in to Morgans, a top of the range fashion store. Shane will perform the official opening on Wednesday 16 October at 12pm.
The store is a business partnership between Shane and his older sister Mairead Filan, who is the store licensee. They will both be present at the launch. A spokesman for Morgans said: “We have a chain of stores across the UK and Ireland. The Sligo store won’t be this big but it will give customers an idea of the Morgan store interior”. Fans of the band are sure to flock to the premises to get a look at their idol, and the premises look set to carry on the tradition of a mecca for the band’s huge following.
Meanwhile, the band picked up yet another entertainment award at the weekend’s Big Buzz WKD Awards held in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. The bash was hosted by Keith Duffy of Boyzone, who can be seen in Coronation Street.
