Battle of the boybands
6 June 2008: Irish crooners Westlife this week equalled Manchester pop rivals Take That's record of the most ever performances at Manchester's M.E.N Arena.
And after accepting their commemorative plaques to celebrate 27 gigs at the concert venue on Wednesday night, they vowed they'd be back soon to smash that figure and overtake Gary Barlow and co.
An arena spokesman said: “The Irish superstars have now sold over 325,000 tickets at the venue since their debut here in February 2001. “And on Wednesday night the boys promised they'd be back to overtake their local rivals, Take That, to be crowned the biggest selling act of all time at the arena.” Ooh, fighting talk, lads.
I hear the hearthrob foursome – Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan, were also chuffed to bits to receive four Manchester United shirts emblazoned with their names, and “27” to commemorate their record-equalling achievement, as they're all massive Reds fans.
