| Westlife plotting to attack the charts |
27 February 2009: Music mogul Louis Walsh has revealed how Westlife are busy plotting to attack the Charts after a year out of the spotlight. He told the Herald that the foursome wanted to score a sensational comeback when they return in June. As well as performing at least two dates in Croke Park, the stars want to launch a determined attack on the charts.
"The guys are all really enjoying their time out. It was great for them to spend time with their families and concentrate on their private lives," he said. "But they love performing and can't wait to get back on stage again".
The X Factor judge, who was last week named the Mayo Man of the Year, explained how he met Simon Cowell recently to jointly mastermind Westlife's return. He has already picked out at least three new songs for the guys which he reckons would prove instant hits.
And despite going for the same teeny-bopper audience, Louis dismissed claims that the group could face some competition from former Take That star Robbie Williams. After years in the wilderness, the British singer is back on the scene after returning from LA. "The guys aren't worried about the competition -- they reckon they would still outsell him any day," he added.
The band will record their new album in June and reveal their 2010 tour dates. In May band member Kian Egan will swap vows in Barbados with fiancee Jodi Albert.

| Nicky’s Surprise |
27 February 2009: CLAIRE O'CONNOR, dressed in a stunning monochrome gown, was rendered speechless when Westlife's Nicky Byrne phoned her at her 21st birthday party recently in the Royal Hotel. Claire, who is from Rathmichael, was joined by her parents Maureen and John, her brother Christopher and sisters Aisling, Amy and Lucy. Her grandfather Jim McGettigan was also there on the night, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Claire's aunt Catherine arranged the phone call from Nicky, having met him at a function and asked him to surprise the birthday girl. The bright 21-year-old attends a UK college where she studies biomedicine and is currently in her third year there. A number of her college friends made the journey from England to be with her on her milestone night.
A former pupil of Loreto Dalkey, a number of her old schoolmates also converged on the Royal Hotel for the evening. John spoke very eloquently about his daughter, while Claire thanked everyone for being there, and thanked the staff for making her night a special one.

Here's one of the ones we enjoyed most, by Bolton_Baby. "I'd love to see Shane in a nice pair of dark jeans with some black etnie trainers with a small pattern on the side. A fitted black t shirt with a pattern on the front and a nice cardi not buttoned up just on loosely or a smart casual jacket. Or some cream baggy combats with plenty of pockets. A white fitted t shirt and a really nice hoody with a cool funky pattern on the front and some nice DC trainers in white. I love men in suits but I love more when there dressed in a really nice casual outfit. Shane would look so gorgeous in that. He always does anyway".

18 February 2009: The band are on a one year break at the moment, despite breaking their holiday to appear on the final night of X Factor. This was the first Christmas since 1999 that the boys didn't release an album, but they still managed to rake it in on their extensive UK tour.
There is speculation about their future with Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell agreeing that when they return to work the emphasis will be on breaking into the US market. There are also rumours of collaborations with Leona Lewis and Britney Spears.

12 February 2009: Nicky is nominated in the Most Stylish category at the VIP Style Awards, which is to be held on the 6 March at the Shelbourne Hotel in Ireland.

| Valentine competition winner revealed |
09 February 2009: Thanks to everyone who entered the Valentine's ‘Roses are red' poetry competition, we had a great time reading through all your entries. The lucky winner is Jo, whose brilliant poem has won her a gorgeous bouquet of flowers from Westlife, to be delivered on Valentine's Day! We've also picked four of our other favourites as runners-up - well done to all of you.

| Westlife fans have karaoke machine confiscated |
06 February 2009: A couple who belted out Westlife hits day and night have had their karaoke machine confiscated. Fed-up neighbours were left clutching their ears as the pair screeched songs such as Flying Without Wings.
The council told the would be singers 10 times to turn down the music which was making the walls of the flat below vibrate and could be heard 150ft away. Eventually officers in Folkestone, Kent, obtained a warrant to seize the machine.
Resident Aaron Attwater, 21, said: "It has been an absolute nightmare."

| Kian and Jodi set date |
03 February 2009: It promises be the €1m showbiz wedding of the year. But the questions on everyone's lips is when will Westlife star Kian Egan (28) swap vows with his former Jodi Albert (24)? And although the smitten couple have done their best to try and keep details of their big day under wraps, the Diary can exclusively reveal that Friday May 8, has been scheduled in for the event.
The young couple, who have been together for nearly five years, won't have to worry about the poor weather ruining their glitzy nuptials either -- they have chosen to have the ceremony in sunny Barbados. The two fell in love with the Caribbean destination during a holiday there in April last year while they were on the hunt for their dream wedding venue. Now as well as forging ahead with Jodi's new girlband, which Kian co-manages with Louis Walsh, the couple are busy putting the final touches to their wedding plans.

No expense will be spared and they're even eyeing up Dermot Desmond's multi-million euro luxury resort of Sandy Lane as a possible venue. The guest list is expected to read like a 'who's who' of big industry names, with all of the Westlife gang already on the list, as well as Jodi's showbiz pals from Britain. "They want everything to be just perfect for their big day so they're leaving nothing to chance," said a source.
"Because both of them are so busy with their careers, Kian and Jodi have hired a celebrity wedding planner to help them with all the details. "Kian also loves surfing so somewhere like Barbados is perfect for him."
Speaking recently about their forthcoming wedding, Jodi confirmed that they had found their venue but wouldn't comment any further apart from saying that they're "really happy with it and that I'm so excited". She added: "The wedding reflects exactly who me and Kian are as a couple. It's so 'us', it's our vibe and everything. It's brilliant and I can't wait for it!" .
Kian popped the question on Christmas Day 2007 and will this summer follow in the footsteps of his married Westlife pals Nicky Byrne and Shane Filan.

| Nicky mourns his bravest fan |
03 February 2009: Westlife's Nicky Byrne has passed on his deepest sympathies to the heartbroken family of one of his biggest fans. Shauna Byrne (10) sadly passed away on Friday morning after a lengthy battle with cystic fibrosis, with a picture of her Westlife hero next to her hospital bed.

Just two months previously, a million Irish viewers watched her dreams came true when she met her favourite popstar on the Late Late Toy Show. Celebrity agent Joanne Byrne, who set up the meeting, explained how the chart-topping star was upset when he heard the sad news. She told the Herald how she was just glad that she was able to set up the meeting for Shauna on Pat Kenny's Christmas show. "I would get a lot of requests, maybe up to 20 every week, from people looking to meet the guys and we would try to help as many kids as we can," she said. "I got a letter saying how much she would love to meet Nicky and how she was a massive Westlife fan. So I gave her mum a buzz, who explained how she was going on the Late Late Show. "It just so happened that Nicky was going to be on the same night and it came together. It was great that he could make her dream come true before she passed away".
The youngster was over the moon after appearing on the show and bravely telling host Pat Kenny of her love for the band. Shauna, who had been in and out of hospital all of her young life, was speechless when her idol Nicky walked out along with his twins Jay and Rocco. Just before her TV treat, Shauna had spent the previous two weeks in Tallaght Hospital battling the disease. She had been completely in the dark about Nicky's special visit as the show's producers invited her to come on the show to demonstrate a camcorder to the audience.
Pat quizzed her about Westlife and, after much persuasion, Shauna revealed that Nicky was her favourite member of the band. The host then told her that a special guest had come along to meet her and out came Nicky with twins Jay and Rocco, with Shauna stunned by the surprise.
At the time, her mum Jackie said: "After the show, we were able to get some pictures of him. His wife Georgina was there and his mother-in-law Miriam Ahern was there. Shauna was just so happy".
