Westlife to play outdoor concert at Ashton Gate in Bristol
26 March 2010: Irish pop group Westlife are coming to Bristol this summer to play a huge outdoor concert at Ashton Gate, the Evening Post can exclusively reveal.
They will perform at the Bristol City ground on Thursday, June 17.
A total of 15,000 tickets were due to go on sale from 7am this morning for the concert, priced between £35 and £50.
Tickets can be bought online at www.ashtongatestadium.co.uk or at www.seetickets.com, or by phoning the stadium hotline on 0871 222 6666 – select option one and then option two, listening out for "concert tickets".
Westlife have sold 43 million records worldwide including 14 UK number ones – a record only bettered by Elvis and The Beatles. Their biggest hits include Flying Without Wings, If I Let You Go and You Raise Me Up as well as covers of Against All Odds, Uptown Girl and I Have A Dream.
The line-up – Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan – saw their latest album Where We Are reach number two in the UK albums chart.
Support acts have yet to be confirmed.
The Westlife show is the first concert to be staged at Ashton Gate since Bon Jovi's sell-out show in 2008 and the popular band follow a long line of major acts to have played at the venue in the past decade including The Who, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Meatloaf and Bryan Adams.
Bristol City group managing director Doug Harman said: "We are delighted to be welcoming an act of Westlife's stature to Bristol for what is certain to be another successful and enjoyable summer concert at Ashton Gate Stadium.
"There is sure to be a big demand for tickets and we would encourage anyone who wants to attend to purchase their seats early to avoid disappointment."
The group first formed in July 1998. The original line-up included Brian McFadden, but he left in 2004. Westlife is the only act in UK history to have their first seven singles go straight to number one, but despite their worldwide success they have only had one American chart hit. Swear it Again made it to 20 in 2000.
The group was originally signed by Simon Cowell and are currently managed by Louis Walsh.
In 2008, they were declared Ireland's ninth richest celebrities under 30 years old, with 36 million euros as a group.
Wheelchair and ambulant disabled tickets should be purchased direct from the stadium. Concert hospitality is also available priced at £120 plus VAT per person on a first-come, first-served basis – to book your table contact the stadium's commercial team on 0871 222 66 66, selecting option three. This offer includes seating in front of the stage, a pre-show meal and souvenir programme.

Let’s Party
image example
18 March 2010: PROUD dad Nicky Byrne was among the many thousands who turned out for Dublin's St Patrick Day's parade.
The Westlife singer took his twin boys Rocco and Jay, who will be three next month, to see the annual pageant, led this year by soccer legend Packie Bonner.
Crowds lined the streets of the capital as grand marshal and goalkeeping hero Bonner waved merrily from his vantage point at the head of the parade.
Some 3,000 performers took part this year – and they certainly didn’t disappoint, as the many locals and visitors clapped their appreciation.
Floats, street performers and marching bands from all over the world made sure the day was one to remember.
The Dublin parade was one of more then 100 parades held around the country, from Skibbereen, in Co Cork, to Dunfanaghy, in Co Donegal.
Beginning at Parnell Square at noon, the participants in Dublin made the 2km walk to St Patrick's Cathedral, via O'Connell Street, Dame Street and Christchurch Place.
The theme of this year's parade was the Extraordinary World.
Marching bands from India, North Carolina, Louisiana, Bulgaria, Austria, France, Spain and Britain added to the international flavour
Guinness hats and greenpainted faces were to be seen in abundance as the good-humoured masses of people cheered loudly for their favourite participants.
Thousands of locals and tourists arrived in the city centre early to ensure the best positions on the parade route.

Bertie Ahern
18 March 2010: Bertie Ahern is spending his second St Patrick's Day in around 20 years on Irish soil, and he'll be watching the parade with his daughter Georgina and her husband, Westlife's Nicky Byrne.
"I'm here. I go to the parade with the grandkids and then I go to Croke Park to watch the club finals. Cecelia will stay at home because Robin's too small, but Georgina and the kids and Nico are going. I think they've tickets for the stand."
Bertie says he's looking forward to a trip down memory lane at the parade.
"I used to always bring Georgina and Cecelia to see the parade so Georgina wants to do the same with the kids now. The parade is always good and people put in a huge effort."
Mr Ahern admitted that he was "fed up" constantly travelling on Ireland's patriotic day.
"I was fed up being away. I'm so glad being here. To be in Dublin on Paddy's day is great, and watch the Portumna match against Ballyhale, and Kilmurry-Ibrickane and St Gall's

Fashion Kicks 2010
04 March 2010: On April 13th 2010, Manchester City football club and International goalkeeper Shay Given are launching Fashion Kicks 2010.
This year the successful, red-carpet event offers an exclusive performance by Westlife, a celebrity fashion show from Selfridges, a lavish dinner by top chefs Brian Turner and Paul Rankin, as well as a charity auction.
Nicky Byrne from Westlife, who joins the event ahead of the band’s forthcoming tour says: “We are really pleased to be asked to be involved in this event once again. We can’t wait to join up with Shay and all the other players for what is set to be a fabulous evening.”
The fashion show will see Manchester City players themselves modelling Selfridges spring summer collections. Selfridges CEO, Paul Kelly states “Selfridges are delighted to collaborate on such an exciting and inspiring event, which sees some of the UK’s strongest talents working together for very important causes.”
Working with the Academy of Culinary Arts, Fashion Kicks will also host chefs Terry Laybourne, Paul Heathcote, Nigel Haworth, and Simon Rimmer to name but a few. Each chef will create a signature canapé in honour of the event, which will be served as part of a champagne reception followed by a mouth-watering feast.
The whole event will take place in two dedicated marquees in the Lancashire County Cricket Ground and be compéred by much-loved radio disc jockey, Neil Fox. All funds raised on the night will be distributed between three worthy causes: Macmillan Cancer Support; the ‘Adopt a School’ project and the Beechwood Centre for Cancer Care in Stockport.

Helpline shocked at surge in calls from children
04 March 2010: CHILDLINE has expressed concern over a large increase in the number of children calling with serious problems affecting their personal safety.
The service had 11% more calls from children suffering abuse or other harm last year – an increase that contributed to a shocking 25% rise in the overall number of calls made.
The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was "astounded" by the increases that brought the total number of calls to its service to 815,708.
Childline manager Lloyd Byrne said the volume of calls raised questions about why children felt so disenfranchised that they had to ring a voluntary listening service to have someone to talk to. "It’s hard to picture 800,000 calls but you would be familiar with what Croke Park would be like full to capacity on All-Ireland final day. Now picture that scene multiplied by 10," he said.
The service, which costs more than €4 million a year to run, receives no Government funding so Childline relies on donations to provide the €5 it takes to answer every single call.
Top-selling band Westlife gave the service a boost yesterday by becoming the first ever ambassadors for Childline. The band, who already support a fundraising concert each year, will lend their name to promotional activities for the service.
lDonations can be made by calling 1800 504050 or log on to ispcc.ie/donate.
lChildline can be contacted free on 1800 666666, visit childline.ie, text "list" to 50101 for information on services, or text "talk" to 50101 to chat to a volunteer by text message.

Boyzone Want To Record Album With Westlife
03 March 2010: BOYZONE want to record an album with Westlife to show Irish solidarity.
Both manbands were created by X Factor judge Louis Walsh, 57, but they’ve never performed together until this week. ITV1.
On Monday they recorded an ITV1 tribute to the late Boyzone member Stephen Gately, which is due to air on March 21.
I caught up with BZ afterwards where Shane Lynch, 33, told me: “I can’t believe that it’s taken us 12 years to perform together. I’d love to record an album with Westlife and I’ve told them that.
“It would be nice to do it for charity. American artists like Jay-Z and Rihanna stick together and I think that we should be more like that too.”
Filming was emotional for Shane, Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, 37 and Keith Duffy, 35, who were singing their hits for the first time without Steo.
Ronan, 32, admitted: “I’m so glad that’s over. I felt so drained and I don’t know how we got through that but I’m glad we did.”
Stars including Robbie Williams, 36, have filmed tributes for the singer, who died last October, but BZ haven’t watched them yet.
Shane revealed: “We’re going to get together on the night it goes out and watch it all the way through.”
The guys duet with Mika, 26, on new single Gave It All Away, which he wrote.
Stephen’s husband Andrew Cowles, 32, watched filming and confirmed: “It would be nice if they could find the strength to continue to tour.”
Boyzone’s new album Brother is out on Monday.

Westlife and Boyzone duet for the first time EVER!
02 March 2010: Oh yes, it's like all the things our Irish, boyband-loving dreams were made of. In fact, our 15-year-old selves did a little jig when we saw it happen before our eyes. That's right, Boyzone and Westlife have finally teamed up -and it was all for a very emotional tribute to Stephen Gately.
Joking about whether their super group should be called "Westzone" or "Boyzlife", Ronan told us he found the day of rehearsals and reminiscing "very emotionally draining" but knew Stephen was looking down on them while they recorded their ITV1 special. Nadine Coyle also joined the lads on stage (in a very boobalicious dress) for a version of Love Me For A Reason and Mika collaborated with them for Gave It All Away while Stephen's sister, Michelle and husband, Andy, watched on. Despiteit being an emotional night, Mikey, Ronan, Keith and Shane sounded great, singing live for the studio full of their fans. You can catch Boyzone: A Tribute To Stephen Gately on Sunday 21 March on ITV1.
