| NICKY IS SURPRISE VISITOR FOR TOY SHOW’S SMILING STAR |
29 November 2008 – SHE’S the girl who is the envy of tens of thousands of Westlife fans after meeting Nicky Byrne on the Late Late Toy Show Last night. Shauna Byrne (10) from Clondalkin, appeared on the show and shyly spoke to host Pat Kenny about how much she loved Westlife.
The young girl who has cystic fibrosis and has been in and out of hospital all her young life, was left speechless when her idol Nicky walked out, along with his twins Jay and Rocco, to meet brave Shauna. “She was all excited – she just couldn’t believe it” her proud mum Jackie told the Herald. “We got the call through the Make A Wish Foundation and it was just brilliant. I am so proud of her and she was just so thrilled”. “She has been in Tallaght Hospital for the last two weeks, but she has cystic fibrosis and has been in and out of hospital all her life”. Jackie added.
Shauna was completely in the dark about Nicky’s special visit – the show’s producers invited her to come on the show to demonstrate a camcorder to the audience and Shauna chatted confidently to Pat about the toy. Then Pat quizzed her about Westlife, and after much persuasion, Shauna revealed that Nicky was her favourite member of the band. Pat then told her that a special guest had come along to meet her and out came Nicky with twins Jay and Rocco. Shauna was left visibly stunned by his surprise appearance – but was able to continue chatting as well as playing with the twins. “After the show, we were able to get some pictures of him. His wife Georgina was there and his mother-in-law Miriam Ahern was there. Shauna was just so happy” said her Mum Jackie.
Nicky told viewers he was looking forward to playing Dad this Christmas as Westlife are on a break. But fear not – the boys will be back next year with a new album.

24 November 2008 – A huge, huge thank you to everyone who submitted cards for the Well Done Westlife competition, celebrating the boys’ decade at the top. You send them in, in your hundreds and there were some incredible entries.
Picking our favourites was a very tricky task, but first prize goes to this brilliant Ten More Years card, which has won its designer a framed collection of Westlife’s album covers. The five runners-up will receive a copy of 10 years of Westlife: Live At Croke Park Stadium.

| Just call it my early Christmas present |
21 November 2008 – Yesterday I won my battle with BBC scrooges when they performed a dramatic U-turn and reinstated Christmas Top Of The Pops. I launched my Don’t Kill Off The Pops campaign last month and was joined by stars of Christmas past and present after TV chiefs announced their decision.
Yesterday we were all celebrating as BBC1 announced Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates will host special festive shows on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

| Simon Cowell, who offered to broadcast the show if the BBC failed to stage it, welcomed the decision. He said “I’m thrilled the show is coming back. This year has been a really great one for music”. |

| MENTION OF SHANE |
19 November 2008 – One surprise attendee at last Saturday’s depressing rugby match against New Zealand was Westlife crooner Shane Filan.
| The pop star, who became a father of two after wife Gillian gave birth to a baby boy in September, was spotted at a VIP event in the 02 area of Croke Park on Saturday evening. And he told the Diary how he couldn’t wait to see the game as it was his “first time to see Ireland play live”. But despite the abysmal match, which saw Ireland defeated 3-22, Shane still agreed to hop up on stage to be interviewed by RTE’s Des Cahill, who joked he “felt like Pat Kenny” quizzing a celebrity. The pop star explained how much he and the rest of the lads were enjoying a well-deserved year off from their hectic schedule – but revealed that they might be back in the studio recording again, sooner rather than later. |

19 November 2008 – 10 years of Westlife: Live at Croke Park Stadium is out on DVD on Monday, but a number of you were lucky enough to attend preview screenings last week. Here are some of the things you have been saying about it on the forum...

18 November 2008 – Westlife’s Nicky Byrne says the fans don’t like the remaining members enough to make them a success as solo artists. The crooner reckons it just wouldn’t work, if someone followed the lead of Brian McFadden, and tried to carve out their own career. Singer Nicky Byrne made the statements as he ruled out any break up plans for Westlife, who are now in a year long break. He told the Irish Sun “We have been together for 10 years and that’s how long we have worked. There are always people coming to you with bigger plans but they never work out”.

| Shane presents €25,000 to Sligo Rovers |
17 November 2008 – Westlife’s Shane Filan presented a cheque for €25,000 to Sligo Rovers at their end of season function in the Radisson last night.
| Avid Westlife collector Gavin Walsh recently donated his collection spanning over 10 years to Sligo Rovers and Westlife snapped it up earlier this week. |
| On the back of their 2-0 win over Bray Wanderers last Friday and Bohemians victory over Cork City, Rovers will now be playing European football next season. The 1983 team were honoured last night as Sligo Rovers celebrated 25 years. The club had a difficult year financially but Westlife’s contribution will no doubt prove vital for an even better season next year. |

16 November 2008 – Westlife have splashed out €25,000 to buy a rare collection of the band’s memorabilia and it will all mean a financial bonanza for Sligo Rovers.
| Band member Shane Filan confirmed to The Sligo Champion that the four Westlife members had agreed over the weekend to make an offer for the collection and they were delighted that a deal had been finalised. |

| WESTLIFE SNAP UP RARE MEMORIBILIA |
13 November 2008 – Westlife have snapped up some rare memorabilia from their early career before it went to auction and thrown a lifeline to their local cash-strapped soccer team.
| The Sligo group paid €25,000 for the 250 items that have been painstakingly gathered by local collector Gavin Walsh after he donated them to a fundraising auction to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sligo Rovers’ FAI Cup Final win over Bohemians, and the band’s 10th anniversary. |
| Shane Filan said he and the other members of the group – Nicky Byrne – Mark Feehily and Kian Egan – decided to put in the bid earlier this week when they realised the collection had become available. “We first saw the collection five years ago and were very impressed by it. When we heard it was going to be auctioned we agreed we should make an offer. Our view was that it was better for the collection to end up with Westlife than anywhere else. We can now put it together with all the other memorabilia we have ourselves so that the complete collection will be in safe keeping. It is hard to put a price on these things but it is of great sentimental value for us”, he explained. |

| Nicky to host Childline Concert |
13 November 2008 – Nicky Byrne has been confirmed to host the first ever concert staged at the O2 in Dublin which will be the big Cheerios Childline charity night.

| Acts include Boyzone, Enrique Iglesias, Shayne Ward, Scouting For Girls, The Script, Alphabeat, The Saturdays and many more to be announced, when they play the Cheerios Childline Concert on 16 December. The concert will be televised on RTE2 on 19 December at 7pm. Tickets are on sale now.

| REVEALED WHAT SHANE PAID FOR A SHIRT |
11 November 2008 – IF you happen to see Shane Filan out and about around Sligo wearing a Padraic Harrington Shirt then we can explain the story behind it. Not only can we tell you where and when be bought it but we can also reveal how much he paid.
| Shane brought the Open and US PGA winner’s shirt at the recent Cathaoirleach’s fundraising ball at the Radisson Hotel where he and his wife Gillian, his mother Mai and other family members had a table. The shirt was one of several items auctioned to raise money for the St Jude’s Children’s orphanage in Uganda. Obviously a fan of Harrington’s Shane was quick to raise his hand when the bidding started. And so keen to acquire the shirt he stayed in the race and beat off al the other bids until his last offer of €1,100 put it past the reach of the other hopefuls. |

11 November 2008 – Cheryl Cole had to apologise to Westlife’s Mark Feehily after insulting his band in a row with their manager Louis Walsh.
On Saturday Cheryl urged JLS not to become like Westlife – not knowing Mark was in the studio watching. Louis, 56, shot back “Westlife have had more hits than you”.
A source said: “Louis took Mark to Cheryl’s dressing room and made her apologise. She was embarrassed and looked like she wanted the ground to swallow her.

07 November 2008 – Stonewall Awards from the worlds of media, television, music, politics and the arts were all full of hope about Barack Obama. The 47-year-old African-American President-elect of the United States gave heart to LGBT people across the world when he mentioned gay people as part of the makeup of the country in his victory speech on Tuesday.

Your challenge is to design a Well Done Westlife card to congratulate them on their incredible career so far. You can draw it and scan it in, design it on your computer, create a photo collage – whatever you like!
